Day 28 - Saturday 28/10/2006
Camping again in the desert. Tonight in an oasis on the banks of the Nile surrounded by snakes, wolves and very scary spiders!! NC watch out!. Lit a big camp fire which just went out while they were on the sat phone. (Reception by the way is great). Can't tell how comfy the tents and sleeping mats are. The boys are so knackered each night that they just crash out.
Correction from yesterday they are not 200km from Khartoum, they are actually now about 100km from Dongola and won't reach Khartoum for about another three to four days.
They have been reliably informed that the roads from Dongola are tarmac - we will wait and see. NC came off again today and keeps falling on the same shoulder. The bikes are ok and will certainly make Cape Town. The riders, however, may struggle. No food today but will cook "something" tomorrow. The Sudanese people are fantastic, very helpful and very friendly.
NG has been safeguarding a message for NC since the start of the trip. He gave him a letter and photos today which his children had written before the trip to be given to him when he was "a long way from home" and to "help him along the way"
Well done NG. Good timing.
If the signal and the battery holds our then wait for another report tomorrow. Nite Nite!
Remember Mick, the Scottish biker?… he has a blog as well. Have a look…http://mickrtw.blogspot.com/

Hi guys,
So far it sounds quite terrifying, daunting and intimidating, not to mention exhausting and humbling. What an experience! It's great to know that the Sudanese are so lovely, good to know there are kind people around especially when you are so hard pressed. Not good news however, that you're not eating properly - and no-one knows about not eating more than you Nick G. You probably think that's the least of your worries but if you don't keep up your strength and health everything will look bleak.
Keep strong - everyone's missing you, especially Ant who mentions it every day - "I just want my Dad back" - and you'll see Robs in CT in Dec. I wish I could send the boys to meet you but that would be too much! Don't worry about the snakes - just remember - They won't harm you, if you don't bother them!
Will had a great weekend with Holly and did a freefall type parachute jump with me yesterday - terrifying and exhillarating - he doesn't think it'll be too hard to graduate to jumping out of an airoplane now - I'm sure that's an adventure too far at the moment! He's missing you loads.
Ok, that's my lot - you have enormous support here - keep going!
hang on in there guys. it sounds really tough, but tarmac is 'only' 100 kms away ... Had lunch at the Tunnel today and we read your postcards which they are keeping proudly ... Hope you find some food today - snake and wolf fritter doesn't tempt you then? ...
Best wishes and good luck
Boys,
We're all right with you. McCleod and I toast you regularly in the Ormonds so all is well (by the way don't eat there - Andrew has started as a KP!). Keep your strength, if you find anything to eat. I guess you'll come back with some interesting new recipes!! Very best of luck and be careful. I know it's dangerous off road......I once did the South Downs on a Suzi 400!
Moan, moan, moan - no beer in an Islamic country in Ramadan, no food in Sudan, too much tarmac, not enough tarmac! It's enough to put me off my cold beer and shashlik.
Don't lose your sense of humour.
Keep it up boys.

Yeah I second that Mac in Bac
WHATS UP WITH YOU TWO GUYS? WHAT WAS THE TRAINING IN WALES FOR IF NOT TO BE ABLE TO COPE WITH THIS SORT OF STUFF? ARE YOU MEN OR MICE? A FEW SNAKES AND WOLVES, SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD NIGHT OUT IN STROUD THESE DAYS! DID YOU HONESTLY THINK IT WAS GOING TO BE A WALK IN THE PARK. SNAKE ROASTED ON A STICK SOUNDS YUMMY. DONT BE SO FUSSY NICK G. WE ARE SURE CLARKIE COULD RUSSLE UP SOMETHING WITH A BIT OF BITE IN IT. KEEP IT UP BOYS, CHEERS! IS THAT A COLD BEER WE HAVE IN OUR HANDS!!!

At last I'm getting a chance to read your very interesting and entertaining blog, while researching trying to turn mine into a book of sorts. Loved reading that story about Nick signing the document to say he'd stolen his own seat. Brought back many happy memories! What a trip. I made it all the way eventually - my 'old' bike is still in the garage, MoT'd and ready fro the spring. And I met a lovely lady in Peru who later became mother to our two daughters. Ah, the romance of it all! Hope you are both well and still riding.
